Provider Highlight: How WDVA Veterans Benefits Experts Help WAServes Clients in 4 Top Service Categories

WAServes – Greater Puget Sound is one of eight AmericaServes Networks across the country with twelve scheduled to be online by 2017. Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) is one of 75 key veteran service providers, spanning the scope of supportive services for veterans and their families in eight counties in the Pacific Northwest service region.

WDVA assists with benefits, veterans’ homes, veterans’ cemeteries, resources for women veterans, veteran business, and other veterans’ programs. WDVA’s Central Office is in Olympia and includes a Veterans Service Center, as well as administrative support for all agency programs. To expand its service coverage to the 593,350 Veterans residing in Washington State, WDVA became a WAServes network provider in April 2017.

UNDERSTANDING WASERVES CLIENT NEEDS

Housing & Shelter is the largest service type requested by WAServes clients, reflecting 32% of all service cases. The figure below indicates the distribution of cases across 16 service types. The remaining top service types are Employment at 28%; Benefits at 11%; Individual & Family Support at 6%; and Legal at 6%.

WDVA is one of the top 3 network providers along with Work of Honor and St. Vincent de Paul. Tied with St. Vincent de Paul, WDVA is second only to the WAServes Care Coordination Center in helping Veterans, Service Member, and family members across four service categories in the following service categories: Benefits, Housing & Shelter, Individual & Family Support, and Social Enrichment.

Here’s a snapshot of WDVA’s participation in the WAServes network:

  • Averaged 7.3 days to resolve a case.
  • Achieved an 83% positive outcome rate in addressing client needs.
  • Worked on the following service case types:
    • 4% of all WAServes Housing & Shelter services cases.
    • 20% of all WAServes Benefits services cases, second only to the WAServes Coordination Center.
    • 17% of all WAServes Individual & Family Support services cases, second only to the WAServes Coordination Center.
    • 50% of all WAServes Social Enrichment services cases, second only to the WAServes Coordination Center.

UNDERSTANDING WDVA CLIENTS

WDVA clients are predominately male, ranging in age from 18 to 64 years old and have served in the Army, Marine Corps., and Navy.

36% are from the Persian Gulf War (on or After 8/2/1990), 36% are from the Post 9/11 (on or After 9/11/2001), and 14% are from the Post-Vietnam (5/8/1975-8/1/1990) service eras.
